Diversion: Orisinal

I can't remember exactly when I discovered this gem (skip to the bottom if you're just here for the links), but it must have been sometime around fifth grade. Having grown up with no video game consoles, the computer was the best tool I had for keeping myself entertained (going outside? psshh). This was back when we used AOL (AOL? psshh) and I had just learned how to bypass the parental control locked down "Just for Kids" zone by connecting to the dial up through AOL and switching to Internet Explorer (high fives if you too did this). The web was my oyster, and I found the pearl in this site.
Most of the games on AddictingGames, ArmorGames, and Kongregate are a bit flashy (pun intended), and a lot of the time this makes for a fun five minutes, but in my maturation I find myself developing a taste for artfulness, craftsmanship, variety, and grace, all of which are embodied by the collection of flash games that is Orisinal. The simple beauty of each concept makes them more than just games.

So put the important stuff aside and get ready to enjoy yourself. Definitely worth bookmarking for a rainy day. Have at it: Orisinal.

P.S. I have no idea where the name came from - maybe a "different" take on Original? Thoughts?

  1. Ezra I haven't finished the post yet. I just got to the Internet Explorer part and I want that high five. I think that every boy did it.

  2. I did the exact same thing as Carlos and you.

One day, however, I was sick of it. My mother was in the kitchen and still logged into AOL. LIke some sort of action/espionage movie I frantically went into her preferences and changed mine. The beauty? I did it so unless one clicked on "details" it still looked like I was on the bullshit kiddie stuff.

That site is dope too. If you like jumping up on clouds and shit and seeing how high you can get for three hours.

  3. There are a couple of worthwhile games on orisinal but it's all about the art design. The website mostly frustrated me though cause after playing for three hours of rope runner I let myself die assuming that I had toppped the high score chart... My excitement soon died when I realized that people pay rope runner for days before submitting their scores... Anyways I still think that Orisinal deserves the shout out and though I havent checked them out in a while Im glad to hear that they still persevere in the modern online gaming world. See you the 12th.

  4. I had my first introduction to the delightful and gently addicting world of orisinal. I began with "catch a shooting star" and was too mystified by the dreamy graphics to score a single point. Moved on to "Bobbing for Fish", here I did phenomenally well, with probably a record score of 269. I got the double twice, but missed the rejuvenation bubble. What a lovely way to get your blood pressure sky-rocketing in the morning.

  6. I remember when we got our computer fixed somebody's son who happened to work with computers or something.

Anyway, I believe it was this man who showed me the AOL to Internet Explorer trick. I was mystified. Once my mom found out what I had done, her only reprimand was, "don't tell your brother."

The best thing I used to do because of absurd AOL parental control was to rapidly E-mail my friends back and forth because I couldn't IM them, but I COULD see that they were online on my basically useless buddy list.
